Semtech: What I Learned About Real IoT Costs After a $4,200 Mistake

When I took over purchasing for our company in 2020, I figured buying IoT components was just like ordering office supplies. Find the cheapest chip, get the quote, sign the PO. Three years and one very expensive mistake later, I can tell you it’s nothing like that. Here’s what I learned about Semtech, LoRa, and the hidden costs of building a connected device network.

The Project That Started It All

In early 2023, our operations team asked me to source wireless modules for a new line of industrial sensors. They needed long-range, low-power connectivity across a campus with multiple buildings. My boss mentioned 'LoRa' in passing. I’d heard the term before but had no idea how deep the rabbit hole went.

I started Googling. First hit: Semtech. I saw their LR1110 chip listed on several distributor sites, but the price per unit looked higher than a few alternatives I found with ‘LoRa compatible’ in the description. Classic rookie mistake: I compared sticker prices without understanding the ecosystem.

The XR60 5G/LTE router wasn’t just a router; it was designed to work seamlessly with LoRa gateways from multiple vendors.

The numbers said go with the cheaper vendor every time. My gut said something felt off about their responsiveness. Turns out that 'slow to reply to quote questions' was a preview of 'slow to ship and fix bugs.'

What I now call the Semtech advantage isn’t about a single part. It’s about the total cost of ownership (TCO). For IoT projects, TCO includes:

  • Integration time with existing infrastructure
  • Firmware stability and update frequency
  • Certification costs (FCC, CE, etc.)
  • Scalability—can you go from 100 units to 10,000 without switching vendors?
  • Support quality—can you get a human who knows the product?

When I consolidated orders for 400 employees across 3 locations in 2024, I applied this TCO framework. It cut our ordering time from two weeks to three days and eliminated the compatibility problems we used to have.

The Real Meaning of 'Semtech'

So, what is Semtech? If you look at their product list, you see 5G routers (XR60), LoRa transceivers (SX1276), video transmission chips (Gennum), and circuit protection devices (RClamp0524P). But what they actually sell is interoperability.

The acquisition of Sierra Wireless in early 2024 wasn’t a random buy. It created a single source for chips to routers to cloud connectivity. That matters when your department is responsible for maintaining the network across three locations.

Here’s a question I ask myself now: 'Is this the cheapest part, or is this the cheapest system?' Because the cheapest part can be the most expensive system.

Lessons for Other Admin Buyers

  1. Don't compare chip prices in isolation. A $5 module that requires a $3 add-on filter and a custom gateway is more expensive than a $7 module that works out of the box.
  2. Verify invoicing and support capability. After the vendor who couldn't provide a proper invoice cost us $2,400 in rejected expenses, I now verify every vendor's billing process before placing any order.
  3. Look for the ecosystem. Semtech's LoRa isn't just a chip standard; it's a global network. If you build with LoRaWAN-compliant parts (like the LR1110), you're not locked into one gateway brand.
  4. Time is a cost. A 6-week lead time might be fine for a prototype, but if your product needs to ship in Q3, a 2-week delay can kill your revenue target.

Now when I evaluate a $650 all-inclusive Semtech quote versus a $500 piecemeal solution, I know which one actually saves my department money. The accounting team loves me for it.
