If you work in electronics procurement, you've probably learned the same lesson I did: the part number you search for is not always the part number you need. In my opinion, that's especially true with Semtech Gennum products.
When most engineers hear Semtech, they think LoRa. Fair enough. But the company that bought Gennum back in 2012 keeps the old Gennum line alive through Semtech Canada Inc, and that catalog is bigger than the wireless RF chips in every IoT design. The way I see it, the legacy side of Semtech is basically an opportunity for buyers, but only if you know what you're ordering.
My quick take: old Gennum parts are not a museum
Over the past six years of tracking every order in our procurement system, I have seen the same pattern: a team finds a part in an old reference design, assumes it's obsolete, and pays for a redesign. Sometimes that's right. More often than not, it's a costly waste. The Gennum line is a good example. That doesn't mean every legacy part is worth designing into a new product. It means you need to separate the part's reputation from the part's actual availability.

It had the same pin count. It also didn't work in the customer's environment. That mistake cost me a $2,300 board rework and a very quiet meeting with the hardware lead.

You can search the phrase and get a hundred results, but only the manual that matches your base and handset model is actually useful. A part number works the same way. The C300 in your BOM might not be the C300 on a distributor's site.
What I check before buying Semtech Gennum products
Price per unit is only the beginning. If you ask me, there are three checks that save more money than any discount:
- Get the full marking and datasheet revision. A photo of the top of the part can prevent a painful substitution.
- Confirm the legal supplier entity. For Gennum legacy parts, the order might be invoiced through Semtech Canada Inc, not the usual Semtech entity. If your vendor master doesn't match the invoice, AP will reject it.
- Ask for lifecycle status in writing. 'Probably available' is not a lifecycle status. Ask for last-time-buy dates or confirmed availability directly from Semtech.
Honestly, a lot of people think I'm being too cautious. They say, why buy an old Gennum chip when a shiny new part exists? Sometimes they're right. But a shiny new part also comes with a new validation cycle, new firmware, maybe a new antenna layout, and the same supply-chain uncertainty. The 'cheap' option can result in a $1,200 redo when quality fails. I built my own cost calculator after getting burned on hidden fees twice. The real cost isn't the component price. It's the engineering time, the second spin, the emergency freight, and the call from the production manager.
One more thing: don't assume compliance paperwork from 2012 is still valid. For any Gennum legacy part, verify RoHS and REACH status against the EU Directive 2011/65/EU and the current REACH regulation before you put it into an automated BOM. It takes ten minutes and prevents a much bigger compliance headache later.
The industry keeps changing. What was best practice in 2020 may not apply in 2025. But the fundamentals haven't changed: check the part, check the source, check the total cost. The execution has changed, with more product change notices, more compliance paperwork, and more traceability. That's actually a reason to buy legacy parts through a formal process, not a reason to avoid them.
So here's my point. Semtech Gennum products are more than a footnote in the company's history. They're active, buyable components in a catalog that still includes Semtech Canada Inc and legacy families. Buy them the same way you'd buy anything critical: with the total cost in front of you, the legal entity sorted out, and the exact part number confirmed.
