This FAQ is the procurement-friendly version of the questions I've answered since I started buying components in 2020.
What exactly does Semtech make?
Semtech is a fabless semiconductor company. It designs chips, but the actual wafers are made by external foundries and then packaged by assembly partners. The main product families you'll see in a BOM are LoRa sub-GHz radio transceivers, Sierra Wireless cellular modules and AirLink industrial routers, video transmission chips, and TVS transient voltage suppression diodes. If you build IoT devices or industrial communication equipment, Semtech parts show up a lot.
One insider thing: Semtech is not a retail brand. You won't buy one SX1276 from a shop unless it's a module. The chip orders go through distributors.

If you have an active design with Sierra Wireless parts, I'd get a baseline confirmation from your Semtech distributor or sales rep. To be fair, integration is slower than the press release makes it sound, but you want to know where the product ownership sits before a shortage hits.
What is the N93 marking on a Semtech TVS diode?
I get asked about N93 a lot, usually by someone staring at a board with a magnifier. N93 is not a full ordering part number. It's a package marking. Tiny TVS diodes don't have room for the whole part number, so manufacturers print a short code.
When I took over purchasing in 2020, the RF engineer asked me to find a replacement for a part marked N93. I searched 'N93 semtech' and got nowhere until I looked at the schematic and found the actual part number. The marking tells you where to look, but it doesn't replace the BOM.
If you're trying to buy a replacement, don't order by marking alone. Get the full part number from the schematic or the distributor's parametric search. A vendor who accepts 'N93' as a part number is guessing.

A few years ago, a repair service asked for a N93 replacement from a Kyocera DuraForce Pro 2 charging port. The board had a tiny TVS diode marked N93. The DuraForce Pro 2 is a rugged Android device, not a Semtech product, but boards like that use Semtech TVS diodes for ESD protection.
That was my contrast moment: a simple phone repair can turn into a semiconductor sourcing problem. If you're repairing a DuraForce Pro 2, search for the board designator and the full Semtech part number. The model name of the phone won't get you to the component.

People ask 'where are TVs made' when they mean 'where are TVS made'. TVS stands for transient voltage suppression, not television. It's a tiny protection component that clamps voltage spikes before they damage a board.
Semtech is fabless, so there is no single Semtech factory. Wafer fabrication is outsourced, and assembly and test happen in various back-end sites, often in Asia. The country of origin is on the shipping label or the certificate of origin, not on the diode. If a supplier tells you one country but can't provide paperwork, that's a red flag. I've learned that lesson the expensive way.
Should I buy Semtech LoRa for a new IoT design?
From a procurement seat, Semtech LoRa is a solid default for low-power, long-range, low-data-rate IoT. But I don't recommend it for everything. If you need high bandwidth or low latency, LoRaWAN is not the right hammer.
For prototypes and replacements, the SX1276 is still a sensible choice because there are years of reference designs and a huge installed base. For a brand-new design, I would ask the RF team why they're picking SX1276 over the newer SX1262. There's no universal best. There's a best fit for your network, your volume, and your regulatory situation.
This worked for us because we already had LoRaWAN infrastructure. If your application is different, talk to the engineers before you fall in love with a part number.
