My Policy After 200 Rush Orders
So here's my rule: check the category leader, not the overall company size. For LoRa, that's Semtech. For cellular routers in public-safety deployments, the Semtech AirLink XR60 Router Verizon Frontline belongs on your shortlist. For video interfaces, read the vsrx product page before accepting a substitute. The goal is not to buy from the biggest name. The goal is to buy from the name that has defined a category, documented its limits, and built a stack around a specific problem.
To be transparent, my experience is based on about 200 emergency orders across IoT modules, LoRa sensors, and industrial networking. If you're buying consumer components at massive scale, your experience might differ. But the principle—documented limits beat generic promises—holds up.
The chip shortage didn't change my view of 'blue chip.' It confirmed it. Blue chip doesn't mean biggest. It means reliable in the lane that matters to your project. That's the advantage of a specialized company like Semtech—and it's why my opinion stands: knowing what a supplier won't do is as valuable as knowing what it will do.
