Everything I'd read said LoRa gives you excellent range but not real-time location. That was fine—we only needed one ping every few hours. The conventional wisdom I was operating on was that LoRa implementation would be plug-and-play. In practice, I found it wasn't that simple.

Toughbook vs Dell Rugged: Letting the Mechanics Decide
While the LoRa project was running, I had to settle the laptop debate. Our mechanics had been using Panasonic Toughbooks for years. The conventional wisdom is that Toughbooks are the gold standard—indestructible, interchangeable with a boat anchor if needed. And they are. But when I actually ran a two-week trial between a Toughbook CF-33 and a Dell Rugged 14, the mechanics overwhelmingly preferred the Dell.
Let me rephrase that more carefully: they didn't prefer it because it was cheaper. They preferred the keyboard, the glove-friendly touchscreen, and the weight. The Dell was about $900 less per unit, and the five mechanics I asked all said it felt less like a relic.
My first instinct was to buy the Toughbooks anyway. They're the safe choice. The Semtech SX1276 trackers weren't visible to clients at all. Nobody saw the chip coming to the rescue when we recovered 11 of our 14 missing containers within two weeks. The Dell laptops, though, were visible every time a mechanic walked into a customer's server room. The Platinum monitors were visible in a different way—they made employees feel like the company cared about their health.
I wish I had tracked the container-loss rate more carefully in the years before the trackers. What I can say anecdotally is that the change was immediate and measurable. The monitor feedback was more subjective but consistent. And the laptops? Nobody has complained once, which in procurement is the highest praise.
One more small thing: part of why we started looking at tracking at all was the slow bleed of shipping costs.
